Elizabeth Kortright Monroe, the young and beautiful wife of James Monroe, America’s fifth president, undertakes a dangerous mission while in France during the French Revolution. The wife of General deLafayette is in a Paris prison, awaiting the guillotine. Lafayette is in exile and Madame Lafayette’ s mother and grandmother have already been beheaded. Elizabeth travels alone to the prison to comfort the prisoner and hopefully sway the Parisians to call for her release.
